Music editing

On my previous computer running on Windows XP, which died 18months ago I had a programme that I was able to edit music files with - cutting bits off etc. very easily the trouble is I can't remember what the programme was, it may have been part of Windows or I may have acquired a freebie from the internet, does anyone have any ideas please. I need something to tidy up the bits at the start & finish of my old vynyl  records. I am now running on Windows7
