Oh dear.. :-\ That doesn't sound good news. Can you send any pictures?
Cherry trees do 'leak' little bit naturally...but..without wanting to sound too negative...what you mentioned brought bacterial canker to my mind...which itself is quite common with cherries and they can live with it for long time and suffering only a bit of die back. But when it 'kicks on' in increased amount..that may cause bigger damage.

"Control measures for the bacterial infection is by pruning infected areas during the summer months and sraying the affected trees with copper-based fungicide; once end of summer, early autumn and mid-autumn.

Most infections occur through injured bark,,such as are cause by pruning, frost crack or leaf fall."

I had the same last year on a cherry and peach tree. It was on the main trunk and one branch of the cherry. I removed the branch but didn't get round to doing anything else - the peach didn't recover but the cherry tree is doing fine and no sign of disease this year. With hindsight I should have done what Goodlife suggested above. On the plus side I replaced the peach with a Granny Smith, it's blossomed nicely and looking forward to some crunchy apples later in the year.
Location: North East Spain - freezing cold winters, boiling hot summers with a bit of fog in between.
