painting garden gnomes

I'm not sure where to put this question, so I've put it here!

I've got a couple of garden gnomes. I think they are quite old and seem to be made of  a cast plaster of Paris. ( They are hollow inside )

They desperately need painting!

Last year I tried some acrylic paint, but it's flaked off. I wondered if it's because it's a non -porous paint?

What paint should I used on them?

I would have thought that plaster was not strong enough to make a hollow gnome, so I don't think that is what it is made from.

If you want to use acrylics, you will at least need a primer, but I don't know enough to help more.

Get some enamel paint you use for aircraft kits, i did one of mine in real gold leaf, it came out really good, still looks new 5 years on

Mrs P bought me a gnome and painting kit that I had totally forgotten about.A nice bank holiday job for tomorrow if the weather is rubbish.
