I bought 6 AQUILEGIA plants from Wilko's and potted them up in 5" pots.  Do I put them outside or in the unheated greenhouse?? ???

Thanks,
Ian

hi all
we grow from seed last year and have about 80 growing in
a cold green house very happy.

Put them in the greenhouse for now, new plants would not like being frozen. But before planting them out in Spring, get them used to being outside.

I'd harden them off as above - windowledge- cold frame and then leave them outside.
Ive got trays of young plants sitting outside which are growing new leaves at the moment so break them in and then leave em out. They are tough as old boots.

Would like some tips please on growing from seed ie:- what compost? when to sow? where?
Thank you,
Ian

hi Ian
when the aquilegias have finished flowering and the pods have
dried out, just put the whole pod into a brown bag keep in a
dry place, then around october crush pods in bag with hand
discard empty pods, you will get loads of seeds so you can sow
some then and keep a few.In a seed tray fill with sieved compost
water well then a hour later sprinkle seed on top, do not cover
the seed with compost. cover with clear plastic bag place in
greenhouse and wait for them to grow to about 1", prick out into small pots
overwinter in cold green house.
hope this helps 5 rod :D

Megga,  thanks so much for that and will give a go.

Fresh seed germinates better than dried. If you do have trouble getting dried seed to grow then before sowing gently  rub it between two pieces of fine sand paper. This scratches the coat and allows water to penetrate.

Thanks you lot (again).

Had megga day down at the allotment, must have been in the 70's c here in North Lincs.

Been removing the ones I didn't weed last year from the allotment....... :'(

If I didn't the whole allotment would be covered in them :o

As above once they are hardened off most are as tough as old boots.
A space? I need more plants......more plants? I need some space!!!!

I find them to be quite invasive. I am always digging them out. Mine all finished up purple.

Robert_Brenchley

They do seed around the place, and if you don't keep selecting, they can revert to the basic purple.

Hibiscus

Basic question, I collected the seeds from mine last year, is now the right time to sow them indoors?
