I had originally thought about keeping chickens on my allotment because there where two of us, as my mother lived with me and she didn't like chickens.  Now its just me I only need 3 or 4 so can keep them in my garden which will be easier and when I am not at work they can spend time in the garden.  The thing is does anyone know if there is a web page to find out if its legal or not to keep chickens in my garden?

Check the deeds in your house. More experienced people will be along.

I would be more concerned about the security of my garden!!!

I just got them when I wanted them:)

Yes check your deeds, but ingeneral if its an ex council house then it will be fine as livestock are allowed in most (but not domestic animals) and if your house was built before 1940. Otherwise youll have to do a bit of investigations.

Ive learnt from ym council that they charge for every instance of investigation of such things and so its unlikley that anyone will ask them to investigate - they get slapped with a £250 admin fee.

So move to lancaster grow your leylandii 40ft tall and do what the hell you want to your garden . On the plus side you can keep a few chickens under the radar. Just dont keep more than one cockeral! unless you hate your neighbours.

But whooppeee new hens what a treat. can recomend sussex bantams 300 eggs a year and freindly girls.

kt.

I have read somewhere that there must be 25 metres between the hens and the nearest dwelling but cannot find it now but have 2 links for you.  First on the government website and second is my council policy on keeping poultry:

My deeds wont allow it but as there are foxes around I'd be pushing my luck. Most deeds lose there power after time. When my parents got their house in 1937 you were only allowed to hang washing out on a Monday....... ::)

I have a copy of the deeds and there is nothing about being banned or allowed to keep chickens.  As for foxes there are more around the allotment then there are in my garden.

Well what are you waiting for! :)
My advice when chooseing a coop where possible avoid the toungue in groove construction as red mites use any crevice to hide inside. So the fewer hiding places there are the better. If you do get one consider giving it a thick coat of gloss paint which will seal up the crack - plus you can have a pink yellow orange coop inside! Plastic is great to.

There are two good forums these are the poultrykeeper and the poultry garden. You can find a local person who breeds hens to help you choose yours rather than risk getting one from someone who just sells them for profit.

and try not to get those that dont have waterproof feathers such as the silkies as they suffer in cold and wet weather.

Its a fab new hobby to begin and as soon as you get your ladies it will be like they were always there.
Good luck
