I have two beautiful shrubs that I have originally planted to close together when they where babies.  One is a Peiris 'Forest Flame' and a Camelia Williamsi 'Donation'  I would like to move the Peiris if it is possible (its about 1 1/2 mtrs high now and just starting to flower) Any advice?  Also I need to move a Blush Noisette rose as the arbour supporting it has collapsed over the winter.  Should I prune this down before I attempt to dig it up? Will it be OK to move these now?  Thanks x

Hi Mimi,
If it was me i would cut down the peris to about half the length on each branch. Then dig it out in a big root ball then if the ground is thawed plant with some fresh compost or if the ground is frozen or there is frost forecast I'd get it in a big tub /dustbin with soil and in a sheltered spot until its warm enough to get it in the ground.
If you move the camelia it will probably drop all its buds so it would be better to wait until its flowered now.
But whist it is a shock to a bush to be moved usually even the roughest transplant they recover by year two.

Once its cut down it should be easier to do without having to trim back anything else.
Good luck with it.

Now you see if it was me I would just dig up the rose and chuck it away and plant something decent. But if you insist on keeping the awful thing, then yes cut it back before moving it.
Gardening is the great leveller.
