When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

I'd guess that to do this he must have been desperate and probably more to be pitied than mocked.  But, if I had to express a preference for the method of arming of robbers, I'd go for a branch every time.  God forbid we ever get to the levels of gun ownership on the other side of the pond.

Let's hope he doesn't branch out into anything more serious!
