When I try and use my computer the mouse operates very slowly and the screen has gone dim.  However if I take the mains lead out and operate on battery the computer works fine.  So I am having to charge up the battery and then run it down, which will shorten the life of the battery

I thought the battery was dieing so I have just got a new one.

It is sending me nuts.  Please help.

You may want to look at the power options under Control Panel - it may be that you have them setup round the wrong way - screen should dim on batteries not on mains.  Doesn't really explain the mouse issue but worth a look..

I have come across this on the Dell site

QuoteAn out of date Video Driver or BIOS can cause abnormal screen issues.

Do you think this means that Dell have built in a self destruct function into the software on the computer?

No it's just that as new operating systems and software come along drivers are improved and errors fixed.  I would only update the BIOS if I really know that ihad no other options but checking on the dell iste if your drivers are up to date is very worth it.

There are several threads on this issue on forums - none of which seems to have a definative answer but try looking at the BIOS (Hit F2 when booting) and checking power options - http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-inspiron-dell-studio/380714-dell-inspiron-1525-screen-becomes-very-dim-power.html
