Can pumpkins ripen off the vine?

turned one of my pumpkins today ( mars ), and the flippin thing came off the vine!, can they ripen off the vine?, its finished growing just not orange, still green...

Happened to me loads of times.  Stopped trying to turn them now.  Give it a wash and bung it on a sunny? windowsill.  Won't keep that well though in my experience.

It should have "oranged up" by the end of October (which is what you care about I expect), Lottie's experience bourn out by me too, they will ripen up but they never really harden so they don't keep as well..
