IT is Sunday August 28 5:45 est /10:45 BST so far only a few power blinks.
the worst of storm is over but wind is still in 45 mph range. my bet is like last hurricane  the garden is down for count. even with the anti wind set up .
the big tomatoes for contest are  about 50-100 mile away.
the water melons should be fine there over 20lbs each but not likely to make 200lbs this year do to fact heat has gone out of summer.
good news is the weeds will be easy to pull after 6 inches of rain.
just glad my garden design prevents flooding.
hopeful this time i will not have to remove tomato cage from neighbors trees and chimney.
On good note the dog finally killed the ground hog the that has been trying to get in to my garden.

storm should end around 7-8 am /noon bst. it is still dark with just hint of morning light.
back to bed till 10.
but no garden whinge for me i out grew that after my first season in 1997

OHs niece has messaged on facebook that power lines will probably be down soon & trees look as though they will be uprooted. She's Pearl River. She was due to visit UK & flights cancelled.

Digeroo

You say wind now 45mph but what was it at the worst.

6 inches of rain in one go is amazing.  We have not even had half that in 6 months.

Looks like the tail end of Irene will be heading our way.  Maybe is will still have a few of PLs tomatoes caught up in it.   ;D

My OH got caught up in hurricane Fran and there was enormous traffic problems for a long time afterwards because so many of the traffic lights were out of action.  Are your lights hung on wires PL?

Good to hear you've come through the battering safe. Hope the garden isn't in too much of a state!

I have a feeling that the blast may well slide across the North Atlantic once it's finished along the Eastern States.

Something to keep an eye on.

Pleased to hear that your OK plainleaf - Which part are you in?

plainleaf

aden i have been maryland.
carbonel11 my garden never left the state do learn to post in proper context.
Digeroo winds were 65-75 mph
traffic lights are on poles and wires.

As for the garden not as bad as damage from the hailstorm and tornado we had on July 17 2009.

i think I will post start thread with garden lessons I have learned.
but number one lesson is design you garden so you can garden despite the weather that may come you way.

And it looks like Jose is not far behind.  And perhaps Katia will soon develop somewhere.  There's a likely suspect off the coast of Africa.

These things are not just one but a conveyor belt of distruction.  It is a good thing we do not have hurricane force winds very often.

It must be very frustrating loosing all your prize tomatoes.

plainleaf

Digeroo I never get frustrated. As for them winning a prize not a big deal.
I have long term goal for the tomatoes but no of the ones that would have won a prize have even had there flowers pollinated yet.
to win prize the tomatoes have to be at least 3.5lbs-4 lbs.

carbonel11

Which variety/ies  do you grow Plainleaf ?
