Is it too late to be planting leeks out now?  I have some in a pot and just haven't got round to planting them out, have I left it too long?

Flighty

No, but do it as soon as possible!
Flighty's plot,  http://flightplot.wordpress.com,  is my blog.

I planted my second row today.   :-\
MAY THE CORN BE WITH YOU.

Has anyone planted them the way Monty did, in clumps?

Catherine F

Mine are just one massive clump  ::)  They're probably a bit pot bound, I just dibble a hole, trim the roots and top and drop them in and fill the hole with water right?

grannyjanny

I don't think it makes much difference wether you trim or not after seeing some untrimmed ones on others plots. I've done both this year. I had some that are suitable for baby leeks, before I saw Monty planting in clumps & I did it with those. He said most people don't just use one leek so he plants in clumps.

If you plant in clumps Jan then you will only get small leeks. When I have finished planting mine I usually leave a few at the end of the row for replacements. These usually get left but they are still only small in the following spring.
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

grannyjanny

Thanks Shirl, they are for baby leeks, only about 3 per clump. I didn't know wether to be pleased or not when I'd done it before I watched Monty ;D. The rest I've planted as normal. I thought it was worth a try ;).

Anisemary

I planted mine in clumps earlier in the year. They were sown in modules initially about 3 or four per module, and they seem to be doing just as well if not better than the single sown ones. The were King Richard.
