My carrots have got 3ft stalks on but root seems quits small.  Should I leave to do what is natural or will trimming the stalks encourage root growth.

New to forum so any advice gratefully accepted.

Too much Nitrogen, not enough Phosphorous, ie you need an NPK fertiliser that  goes lo-hi-lo such as Superphosphate or Bone Meal
Nothing is ever as it seems. With appropriate equations I can prove this.

Welcome to A4A Debandy.  Some varieties for me do seem to produce a lot more up top than others, but I have always left them to do their own thing.  I have the belief that cutting them attracts the carrots root fly.  But I have naver had them as big as 3 ft.

When you say three feet are they producing flowers?

Debandy

It looks like they are just about to produce flowers.  I have pulled a couple and the roots are quite long but look like they could do to fatten a bit.

Welcome to A4A Debandy...
They are running to seed... probably can use them for soup if you remove the hard core... are they all going over?

Is it too late to do this?

Saddad is one of our best experts and if he says soup then soup it is.  I also do not think you can do much more once their flowers appear, except perhaps just enjoy the flower heads.

Sounds to me as if they have got a bit confused with the weather.  When did you sow the seed?

ah you didnt mention the flower heads i n the first post......................no its too late if they are flowering, the fat lady is halfway through the first chorus.

I had a few bolt (go to seed ) like that a few years ago, as it was only a few I let them flower, but once they have bolted thats their lot, as Saddad says.    ;D
