My tip would be to grow loads of dahlias and then replenish your vases every three days, thereby deadheading in the process

Failing that because they exude milky sap I would recut the stems an inch shorter once you bring them in and then singe the ends with a candle, this stops the sap from coming out so much.

Best laid plans and all that

Hiya
I love a vase full of dahlias
we grow about 40 varieties and they are really very different in a vase

it seems to me that the waterlily types like tarahiti ruby that tend to hold the flowers high above the leaves on semi woody stems do the best. whereas more fleshy ones are terrible.
the larger flowered ones also tend the have the woodier stems that last better. but stay away from the dinnerplate gaints as they just sag.
So dont give up just expereiment with varieties.
