Sweetie could you please be a bit more specific? House plants for whom, for where ... flowering or non-flowering? size, fruit producing .. or basically what do you want them for?

Jeannine

Anne, I just fancy growing some houseplants, here they used to be two a penny but now they are incredibly expensive and if buy the flowering ones they have been so forced they don't live long. I actually prefer green plants rather than most flowering ones and I like things that grow well in ceiling hangers indoors. I don't like potted Mums or Cyclamen.

Having said that I do like African Violets and my new orchids so really any, even flowering ones I might give a go.

Everyone I know has stopped having houseplants so no chance for cuttings anymore.

It is that need to grow thing!!

if only you lived in the UK jeannine as i have a couple of propagated babies off a plant that I don't know the name of (maybe someone might help me??) that i could send you ::) ::)

it's got a v. waxy green round disc leaves that grows from the base of soil and the stems of the leaves sprouts from there too. i can't quite describe this properly w/o knowing the teminology of plant anatomy, but i hope you know what i mean. i've tried in vain to find this plant from various books, but nothing has come close. once, i saw it in a home decor type magazine and it was on someone's veranda in the States (but the plant was much more vigorous too). it's a v. easy plant to look after, in fact the easiest i've ever grown to the point of neglect even as it doesn't require regular watering. every month or so from an established plant, there's baby ones that surface in the surrounding soil in the pot, so i don't really have to do anything to it to encourage this. i suppose it'll need a feed sometime soon, but there's never been any signs of ill-health since i had my original plant 3 yrs ago from a Plant Swapping event...

oh that's great ;D ;D ;D i've completely forgotten about CS, i'll have to reorder from them for houseplants, as i love to find out new ones. i agree with you, jeannine, the market for houseplants in the UK has dwindled in the last 5yrs, and it's v. rare thesedays for garden centres to stock more than five kinds (Peace Lilllies, Poinsettias (yak!), Cacti et al)

Does anyone grow Staghorn Fern? i found this also in an American magazine and it took me 5 yrs to find the name and plant in a garden centre last yr. it's a bit poorly now. maybe i should of repotted it this Spring ::) ::)

eBay's a good place to look for plants of all sorts.

Thompson and Morgan do a range of house plant seeds - and they have a Canadian office and website

Jeannine

T&M Canada sadly don't sell very much and a lot of the Uk varioeties are not on offer, same with T&M USA, but I will take a look, thank you.

I had a staghorn years ago but I wasn't keen as it always had some parts going brown, was typical fir the plant apparenlty but went against me tidy mind

The unkwon plant sounds very exciting, I really envy you. You must find out what it is.

;D

Yes, from me too!

Houseplants have as yet been one domain where I haven't got into compulsive seed-sowing .... may not be the case much longer as that list is sooo tempting.   ;)
