Hello all being new to the allotment i have just found out about companion planting i was wandering if anyone could tell me what would be a approximate  safe distance to plant something from something that is not compatible  ???. Sorry for sounding stupid but better to ask the question than to just go ahead willy nilly .Thanks in advance ATB.Roy.

I don't think there's any real safe/unsafe distance as incompatible plants won't kill each other, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. I like companion planting too - always plant my carrots/parsnips in with the onions/leeks/garlic, and grow marigolds and nasturtiums all over the place. But I'm not scientific about it, and the plants don't seem to mind. Some people think you should keep potatoes and tomatoes as far apart as possible to stop blight spreading, but there's a limit to how far apart things can be anyway on an allotment.

Bob Flowerdew is a big fan so have a read of his books if you want to know more.

Good luck and happy companioning!  :D :D

plainleaf

5ft sunflower at least from any crop but corn
25-30 feet between tomatoes and dill.
3 ft onions and (french beans and peas)

bikegirllisa

Old feller on the next plot told me planting marigolds next to anything makes the plants just about bomb proof!

Teegee's site has this page, which is interesting and you might find it useful.

Good luck, let us know if it goes well!

bikegirllisa and pigeon that was not question.
As per marigolds they only work for a few root pest the next season.

Its not advisable to grow Potatoes and Tomatoes near to each other, that about the only ones i know.
When you wake up on a morning say "good morning world" and be grateful
