How do I get rid of Ivy growing up the fences

I have well established Ivy growing up two of my three rear fences. I've started pulling it away but is there a way of killing off the new growth that I just know is going to appear?

Cut it off at the base of the fence. The stuff on the fence will then die. Dig up the roots at the bottom of the fence. Keep an eye out for it growing back and get rid of it as it appears.
