I bought a bag of these from a supermarket- never heard of them before
so I was wondering if anyone knows anything about them  or is the name  made up by the
marketing chaps? Taste good though.
Cheers.

Are those the pink ones like big shallots? The ones I've sen look very like pink torpedo, partway down the page here: http://www.plantsofdistinction.co.uk/acatalog/A-Z_of_Vegetables_ONION.html . I don't know whether they are or not.

"pink Torpedo" looks supsiciously like Long Red FLorence.... good onion for growing with the "4 seeds in a module and plant out the groups" technique....

Thanks chaps but these are large( several the size of a grapefruit) round onions ,the only thing I could think of was the Pink Rosscoff onion which I know the French will not let out of their sight and these are grown in Lincs .Do you think it might be possible to plant one for seed or am I up a gum tree?
Thanks again.

Do you think it might be possible to plant one for seed..it's certainly worth of try. Which supermarket did you buy them from?
I grew last year Pink Torpedo onions from plants of distinction..yes they are very similar to long red florence..but without growing them side by side its difficult to say if they are same. My torpedos did grow really large though..but I did grow them as single plants.

A few years ago I bought a Thai curry pack and it contained chili, a few other things and a couple of pink shallots.

I planted them in late October, but by spring they had perished.  They weren't winterhardy here.

Thanks both ,the onions were form Asda in Leicester,I will plant one out with my usual sets and lull it into a false sense of security.
If I get any seeds -fancy any?

Robert_Brenchley

If you want to grow them out for seed, plant several so they can cross-pollinate. It's an outbreeder, but the HSL don't give any advice as to the minimum number. All they say is that the flowers can't self-pollinate.

Many thanks Robert ,perhaps I should plant 3 or 4 in the flower bed, next to the scabious which are awash with bees in the summer,
Cheers.

Marshalls do a large red onion, red baron can get big if you pamper it, Kamal is generally pretty reliable..... there are a lot of red round maincrop onions :D... YOu can get sets of Red Baron most places too...

These sound intresting, look forward to hearing how you get on. I'd plant as many as you have spare to maintain vigor.

On the pink onion theme, I'm trying the variety Rosanne (from T&M) along side Roscoff this year to see how similar they are.

A while ago, I looked into which onion varieties they grow in India, because they're such a stunning irridescent pinky brown.

It seems people have bred short day onions and long day onions, for different parts of the world. Their onions are bred to bulb up in their shorter days, where ours bulb up in long summer days. So if you plant short day onions, they might possibly not like our conditions. But it wouldn't hurt to try.

They apparently grow a lot of bunching onions there too, which can do well in conditions onions don't like. So you might have got yourself some shallots. Time will tell!

I'm growing onion di savona/savonese which is pink, but very hardy, it's doing well so far, and it's pink. I haven't tasted them yet of course. But they look nice!

Sorry I missed that.  You are after large onions not pink shallots.  Disregard my earlier post.

Thanks all, I might be bold and e-mail Asda  I will let you know.
Cheers
