I sowed some sweet peas that are now 6" tall in cell trays.  Can I plant them outside now? (Teeside, N Yorks)

If you do give them some fleece to keep the wind off them...  :)

I sowed some from my own seeds from last year and to see at the beginning of January and I put one pot full out about six weeks ago.

They are still alive and during that time it was very frosty.

Now my mate Jack told me to cut back the other sweet peas I had which were getting straggly. Which I did. He said I would not kill them. All it would do is make them thicken up.

Well Jack was right.

Those straggly looking things I cut back to next to nothing are now thickening up wonderfully.

You have to do it to a leaf joint. Don't just hack them.

Good luck.........I have sowed another packet  of bought seeds.....just in case but think I will get sweet peas from both. (I know from experience that they do not mind getting a bit crowded together.

Stick them in a cold frame for a few nights to harden them off and they should do well in the ground after that.

Got them back now to put some tread on them

I am putting my exhibition cordon trained sweet peas out now.  They are hardier than you think and can stand a little frost.  I do not protect my sweet peas with anything.  My autumn sown sweet peas are already out on the allotment, although there are not that many because I lost a lot during the severe winter - they are not that hardy.  Having said that some of last years sweet peas dropped their seed and these have germinated on the allotment.

My sweet peas are out all day and in the poly at night although I'm sure they would be OK outside now. I'm in North Lincs.I just haven't got my supports organised yet.
