My wife has just come back from the local market with 24 strawberry plants €0.50 each - flowering and with some small strawberries showing. I don't think I'm going to have space for all of them so considered getting a planter bag. Has anyone used something like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/pack-Strawberry-Grow-Bags-Planters-/230587187970?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Garden_Plants_Pots_Window_Boxes_CV&hash=item35b0114302 - concern that the bottom of the soil might dry out - any experience using one of these? I've seen hanging ones too but don't really have anywhere suitable to hang them but could sort something out I guess if it was preferable.

Cheers!

I have a ceramic planter and it does well except the spaces on the bottom of the north side do not do well and just do leggy.  I find it quite a struggle to keep it most yet not overwater.  The wet seems to kill them quicker than the dried.  But the are great for netting since you can just sling it right over the whole thing.  I also have mine up on the top of logs to deter the slugs though the ants climb straight up as do the mice so in the end put the net underneath as well.

I have found it best to remove the plants after fruiting and replace with some good runners because once they finish I do find I forget to water.

Thanks, I guess I could put a piece of drainpipe down the middle with holes in, that might help. Good point about the positioning too.

Ants are a real problem here but fortunately we don't get slugs, lots of snails though.

Diggers - do you find it a vine weevil magnet? I have a nice old clay strawberry planter thing & they always munch the roots.
