Yes.. but the best was accidental.

I dumped some old growing mediium into a cucumber frame and the following year we had a bumper crop of mushrooms.

Years before that we grew them in a big shed, in raised beds on stilts so they were easily accesible.

We used to get mushroom spore in cubes  which was pressed into the growing medium. It was quite a large scale as I  had a spare shed and as I lived near a mushroom grower  his son who was dating my daughter set it all up for me..

I don't remember exactlt what went into the medium, but once they stareted to grow they went on for a very long time.

Since then I have tried various kits of different types of mushrooms and my opinion is ..OK for fun, but the raised beds were certainly the best for yeild etc.

I tried a kit many years ago when they had jsut appeared over here.... I've got another one now but with some cunning plans involved.... once I've had my crops from it I'm going to stick it into a big bed of strawy manure that's rotting down pending squashes on the allotment.... hopefully in the asutumn it will give me another much wider crop of mushrooms... plus the only thing you can really confuse it with is Destroying Angels and it's not that hard to tell them apart.....

Storys.. ;D..well..some years ago when the complete kits were still new thing our local Asda had them in on their gardening section..I don't know if they had accidentally priced the boxes wrong but they were 'dead' cheap..so emptied the shelf ;D ;D That year I had mushrooms coming out of my 'ear holes' ::) Even I tried to start each box few weeks apart they all took and yielded well with several cut and come again crops..yeah I was greedy again.. ::)
Since then I've tried different mushrooms on logs..on toilet rolls..and yes I've had some but really hit and miss..
Those polystyrene boxes with the straw growing media and the spawn kits were the best crop wise..
I haven't tried since as the prices they ask these kits seem to me too much...I suppose that was real one of. If my memory serves me right they were prices then £1.50 per kit and they were the larger sort.. :o But I haven't seen them sold in that Asda after that ;D ;D ;D :-X

THe ones Aldi just had were 150 a kit or nearabouts IIC..... only reason why I bothered with the cunning plan.... TBH I prefer them to horse mushooms, it's a texture thing, plus that odd smell horse mushrooms have when they're cooked.....
