Does anyone have a simple recipe for this?   Jamie Oliver did one earlier this week but it had so many ingredients, some of which I do not have.  I thought there was one on the D site but couldn't find it.  Thanks for any help.

A tin of chopped tomatoes and a tin of pineapple chunks heated together, then thickened with cornflour (which has been mixed with the pineapple juice)  make a nice sweet and sour sauce.  Not authentic but quick and tasty.  Goes nicely with fried chicken pieces or with left-over turkey.  I like to add a few drops of Tabasco Sauce and salt.  Adding Chinese spices to taste would probably make it more authentic.

Asda actually sell, very cheaply, their own 'smart price jars of sweet and sour sauce, which is, surprisingly, very good. I always keep some in. It can make a decent meal from left over roast chicken or pork.

The very basic sauce is
Sweet, which can be sugar or honey
Sour, a vinegar or lime juice (lemon can be a bit harsh).  A little water to get the quantity then when it is in the wok and comes to the boil add a teaspoon of cornflour mixed with a desert spoon of water to thicken.

Start with a desert spoon of honey or sugar and a desertspoon of vinegar in a cup then make up to about a quarter of a pint with boiling water from the kettle.

Taste it, if too sweet add a little more vinegar if to sharp a little more honey or sugar.

Then add a shake of soy sauce and a bit of chilli if you like a touch of warmth.

Keep tasting until you find the balance of the ingredience suits you.

The list of ingredients can be as long as you want to make it because the addition of something like ginger (fresh or powdered). Chopped shallots or onions and other veg will all change the flavour slightly.

Experiment a little, it is fun.

Thanks both.  I tried the pineapple and tomatoes tonight.   Added some onion and soy sauce, then chicken and noodles.   We enjoyed it.

i know you've already made it but this used to work for me:

Fry off some onions, and add some dried apricots.

then add some chili for heat, and some passata.

Cook it down a bit and then serve with noodles.

Meat if you want it, can be added once the onions are cooked down.
