Planting.

Having the luxury of being a novice, I’m in the process of clearing some heavy weeds from a small section of my allotment and have been told to put spuds in for the first year, which I have done to some extent. Being new to this I’m eager to have all sorts of things going into the ground.
Is this approach advisable?

Hi Mack,

A little bit of all sorts has worked for me. Took over my site in April, and have dug out fences, concrete, carpets, glass etc. But in the meantime have planted the beds I've dug with tatties, cauliflower, beans, lettuce, peas and onions - not large amounts but enough to be harvesting stuff now and getting more than one Sunday dinner out of it !! The child like pleasure I've had from eating different stuff I've grown is almost pathetic.

So far so good, fences, concrete, carpets & glass are just about out and this wet weather is good for digging. Got a game plan of sorts for the next month or two and learning every thing the hard way……….I’m sure every thing will taste much better for it. Much to the dismay of onlookers, it’s a case of “nothing ventured, nothing gained” and I’m definitely going for 100% open plan, no physical borders or paths.
