Today a thought crossed my mind regarding insect populations, remembering 20 or 30 years ago, if you went on a country run in the car, when you came home there were hundred of fly's stuck to the front of the car and spattered on the windscreen, these days there are none to speak of. Has anyone got any comments on this phenomenon.

The vehicles are more aerodynamic nowadays. When I go out on my motorcycle my visor and jacket get smothered but the helmet being more rounded, is clean.

I think this has been happening over quite a few years. If my memory is correct, an organisation, can't remember which one, was sending people a small sticky piece of plastic that you placed on the front of your car. When you returned home, from a drive in your local area, you posted this plastic film back for them to check which type of insects were attached.

I think that most vehicle transport is deliberately directed towards motorways and major roads now. At one time the sign posts gave a variety of alternative routes.

Not only that but with the increase in vehicles on the roads, there is a greater choice of windscreens for kamikaze insects to die on.

Midges, mosquito's and such were what I remember most on windscreens and I don't care what any one says about ecology, they, like rats and ants are species we could welcome a decline in numbers of.
