I had some Jubilee Hysor broad beans in a plastic bag tucked away in my fridge and they have sprouted!!

It seems a waste to throw them away so am going to plant them.  Has anyone successfully planted broad beans in September?  Most of the web sites say sow in November.  Unfortunately they are a type that should be sown in the Spring.

Broard beans are closely related to field beans, and it says sow field beans Sep onwards, so they should be OK, or well worth a try anyway.

As an exsperiment, come November, if they are a decent size, chop half of them down and see if they re-grow, and then compare how each half does.

Good luck, let us know how they get on.

The key here is; they have sprouted!! so you are just as well sowing them.

If you can; sow them in a sheltered spot, and who knows they might develop quite quickly so that you can eat them this year.

Failing that; they might survive the winter in such a spot thus getting you off to a flying start next year.

What is fairly certain is; if they have sprouted they won't survive till sowing time in spring!

As an alternative you could spread your luck by sowing a few in 3" pots (1seed/pot) and some outdoors.

The ones in pots may survive in a cold frame.

Choose which way you go you are going to either sow them or bin them!

The choice is yours!

Sow them and see. Some varieties are hardier than others, and I don't know this one.
