I can't find the original topic, but help me please. I suddenly acquired a plant from nowhere. On my carrot bed a mysterious plant is growing. It definitely looks like one of the squashes but which one is it. The thing that fascinated me was the tiny spikes on the stem, unlike the rest of the squashes. The courgettes have very rough hair whereas the butternut squashes smooth hair but the leaves feel a little rough. Here are the pics    A fruit is growing too....?

it looks like a courgette, doesn't it?

lilyjean

No that isn't a courgette   :( One of my tenants it could a round marrow? or spaghetti squash??

Jeannine

Marrow and spaghetti squash are from the same family as your courgette  so all the leaves should be prickly with a 5 sided sharply angled stem. ALL the other  different families  of squash share one common thing that is  the stems will  be hairy not spiky or prickly.. it is what denotes the various family of squashes.

Look at your butternut and then your courgette, they both have 5 sided fruit stems but the butternut should have  softer angles than the courgette and the plant stems should be hairy not prickly.

Then look at the mystery ones stem and compare to the other two..is it 5sided sharp angled or 5 sided softer angled. I can't tell from the picture. The butternut stem will flare out just slightly where it attaches to the fruit too.The courgette will not.

I will try with some more info.

and.....here is another. Some suggest it could be a round zucchini, but I'm not sure. Others suggest a melon........

you're definitely right lincsyokel2 but is it a melon, pumpkin, cucumber.....  :-\ no-one seems to know on the allotment   ;D

Jeannine

This is why I asked what size the flowers are.. if melons they would be much smaller than pumps or squash and I see in the background they are big so that lets that out.

Size?
