Has anyone grown tenira strawberries.I wondered whether they had a good flavour   -- what are your favourite strawberries   -- mine so far are gariguette

Sorry I can't give advice from my own experience, I haven't grown either - tenira is often recommended, so must be fairly nice. Perhaps it all comes down to personal taste, and local growing conditions.

I'd like to grow strawberries next year, and I had in mind 'mara des bois.'

PS. What swayed you towards that one. I am looking at that one & Flamenco. Went to daughters plot yesterday & a lovely man there was showing me an easy fill hanging basket, £15 at Suttons & £4.30 from the gardening society. I thought it looked perfect for strawberries. He is going to get me some.

Just looking round for reviews of strawberries for flavour, mara des bois were said to have quite intense flavour - they sounded good.

But I should think there are many varieties these days which are tasty. I even find that the commercially grown ones have really improved on flavour since the 80s - when large strawberries were always watery. Now they seem really pretty nice (as long as they're not too early or late in the season, when they're pretty tasteless)

It's my maiden year for strawberries this year, I am growing Gariguette, Cambridge Late Pine, Chelsea Pensioner and Mara des Bois, After the summer, if we get one, I'll update as to which is my favourite.

... tenira is often recommended, ...

Who by? as far as I know this isn't grown often in this country, would be grateful for any info on folks growing it, esp in south of UK.

Hi,I`m growing it for the first year  (from ken muir) It`s supposed to be one of the best flavoured

i grow tenira  and cambridge late pine. The tenira really are fantastic strawbs. I have reordered this type twice over 7 years - lovely. Cambridge Late Pines are new for me this year ( actually did the removing flowers last year and have great plants this year) - can't wait.

Well, I said I'd come back and say what I think of each.

Gariguette: Superb flavour, but yield is lowest of my four and the plants just look kind of weedy.

Cambridge Late Pine: What a flavour, surprises you the first time you eat it, intense perfumed sweetness, seems to have the flavour 'strawberry flavour' was based on, just they couldn't nail it on the head. Nice big fruit, vigorous plants, mixture of small and large berries, stalk slips clean out. Two friends that don't like strawberries have been converted by this fruit, in my garden at least this strawberry is king.

Chelsea Pensioner: Paler fruit than my others, meaning some have spoiled on the plant because they have not been perceived as ripe when picking, large fruit, good yield, superb plants, but just not as good a flavour as the rest, despite Ken Muir describing this as the 'perfect strawberry'.

Mara des Bois: another winner, flavour is intense and sweet, texture is the perfect balance of juice and dry matter, stalk comes clean out of the fruit and yield is just amazing. Just flowers and flowers and flowers. The fruit are a great size and elegant shape, the plants are beasts.

Over all I have been very happy with my selection, all plants came from Ken Muir, who currently has a special offer on strawberries.

Yield has been just huge, we have been picking a 14" mixing bowl full every other day for about a month.

I haven't noticed any difference in plant season though, early, mid, late, perpetual; all started fruiting at exactly the same time.

Shall keep an eye on this thread. I have cambridge favourite, which aren't bad (well they *are* strawberries!) but not the best. And Florence, which aren't quite what I expected. Can't put my finger on it. And they are both fruiting at the same time, even though they're not supposed to!
gone to pot :D

campanula

despite my rubbish sandy soil and no rain, the strawbs have been OK. Cambridge Late Pine was a revelation and Tenira makes the most fantastic mousse. Because it has been so dry, many strawbs are on the small size so I have been doing 'stuff' with them rather than just eating them as they come - they tend to look a lot less appetising after having been picked a day earlier. Again, no difference in seasons, all came at once.

I'm replacing my strawberries this year, I'd like to try Cambridge Late Pine, but can't see anyone selling them at the moment: any ideas?
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴
