Collars for cabbages ???

Hi it's me again, instead of buying collars can I make my own?? if so anyone know what I should use??

You can use cardboard..and it will last for you some time..and it is cheap so if it needs you can afford to do it again.. ::)
Personally I don't use any collars at all..and haven't noticed anybody else around doing it neither..
Just try what the situation is in your area..leave few without collars and see if you really need to do that.. ;)

i used plain corrugated sheets , which i cut to about 5 inches square, cut a hole about 10mm in the middle
cut a slit from the hole down the middle.

any non printed cardboard box from the asda will do the job......and all for free  ;D

I had some for Christmas and find they tend to blow away from the plant. Luckily I have the brassicas netted so it's easy to pick them up, but in windy weather ....  ::)

Never use them I think they are a waste of time and or money!

I've never used them up until this year. 

My psb just upped and wilted on me - despite watering.  I gave up and pulled them and found no roots at all - they were lovely healthy plants when I put them in  :(

I've just planted another sowing, with collars - so fingers crossed thes'll be ok, but I expect they'll get clobbered by cabbage whites !!

I think collars are a wait of time to be of any use they must fit snug around the stem with no space between the stem and the collar.
The root fly does not land on the soil, it lands on the plant and and makes it way down the stem so if you have any gaps it will find them and get to the root.
