An HMV spokesman said: "If we thought the shirts were in any way racist, then we certainly wouldn't have stocked them.

"In our view, the shirts are not against England or the English, but simply about some Scottish fans expressing a view that they want any team other than England to win this year's World Cup.

The "is it racist" argument is facile.  It's a taunt, so grow a bigger pair.  Face it, some Scots, and quite a large part of the rest of the world too, don't particularly like the English.  As a race we haven't always behaved terribly well, and the English abroard are still not exactly the epitome of considerate respect.

But in any case, it was always going to be anyone but the English.

As a race, mankind just about everywhere in the world has not always acted kindly toward some group.

what really winds Scotiish people up is for most English people most of the time, "anyone but Scotland" only applies when we play Scotland. It really bugs them that we don't hate them as much as they hate us (in a sport context)

you're best off out of it GrannieAnnie. You should stick to sports no-one else plays, like American football or baseball. Too much grief with footy.
Baseball was one of ours we gave up on by the way  8)

Is that the same as rounders.  :-\       ;D ;D ;D

[/quote] "Even American Indians played with balls and bats: there is a town in Georgia called "Ball Ground" which was founded on the site of an ancient Indian ball-game pitch, and it is said that the Cherokees and the Creeks settled a war over territory with a game of stick-ball here–how extremely civilized!"
anyway it is better if the Scots and Brits fight over soccer than real war, so go at it!

the game "baseball" is played in Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, who incidentally threw a mean curveball  :D

Everbody throws balls around but "baseball" as a named game was ours I think

unfortunately Cricket was probably French. but we invented Champagne  8)

I'm not a football fan, but I thing Scotland will have its wish granted, and the England team will be back home in the next few days.

Two matches played, and the England team played like a bunch of overpaid  pampered jessies.

I find the Anyone but England to be offensive.  Until recently I had rather liked Scotland and the Scottish but the current wave of anti English rhetoric is really beginning to bug me.  I particularly dislike it in Scottish people who live and work in England.  If they do not like the English I would suggest they go somewhere they feel they can support.

Jeannine

I haven't seen the T shirts but judging by what I have read , they would offend me. They would whatever country they had written on them actually.

I find it odd as there is so much fighting among supporters in some sports..why ask for trouble?

I have always been baffled by welsh and Scots who settle in England and then moan about everything English all the time and believe me I know a few who have been doing this for years. ???

As for the England team, they may be rubbish but they are our rubbish so I support them and wish them well. :)

Borlotti

It has been withdrawn, so it says on internet.  I want a tee shirt saying 'may the best team win'.

Must have been sleeping at some point and missed it - when did England become a race???

My son (born in Scotland!) was sent from relation in NZ a t-shirt that reads something like 'I support England or any team playing against New Zealand'......it's always puzzled me why he was sent this (by a Kiwi!? and sold in NZ!). He wore it anyway now it's too small...I guess it would be a good time to sell it on ebay...quick!

PurpleHeather

It does seem that a lot of the other three hate the English but the English could not give a monkey's uncle about the Scotch, Welsh or Irish. Wonder why?

Yup because we're rubbish.... by the way where did you get you signature Unwashed? Made me laugh, I'm on Parsons at the end of Craven road and we're supposed to be getting 40k's worth of fence or something.
