I'm confused (as usual!)

There seem to be buds forming on my new raspberry canes. I planted them in January this year. I have autumn-fruiting ones, that I would expect to flower later this year (right?) but the summer fruiting ones are also in bud. Is that normal? I thought they wouldn't fruit until next year.

When you planted them, did you cut back the Autumn fruiting ones?  They fruit on new wood so could be fruiting on the growth made late last year.  If they are cut back early in the year, they make growth for a few months, flower and fruit in the Autumn.

Summer fruiting ones have the old wood cut out after fruiting, leaving new growth to overwinter and fruit the following year.

Naughty raspberries - they clearly haven't read their labels! "Autumn" (which isn't really the best name) ones are starting to flower on their new growth here. The ones that I leave for an early crop (good trick, by the way) are already forming fruit. Even summer ones often give you a few freebies in the first year anyway. Enjoy!
