This is also my first year at attempting to grow buttersquash but I have a quick question too.

How many fruits generally grow per plant and do they grow vertically or trail across the ground?

Mortality

Bump, cos I'd like to know too  ;D
Please don't be offended by my nickname 'Mortality'
As to its history it was the name of a character I played in an online game called 'Everquest'
The character 'Mortality Rate' was a female Dark Elf Necromancer, the name seemed apt at the time and has been used alot by me over the years.

you can get 6-10 fruits
as for grow vertically or trail across the ground?
they always trail across ground unless you train them up a trellis of some sort.

:(

My experince is  that you get smaller fruit if you tie them up vertically,

Think in terms of 4 or 5..some are more prolific than others and you can get more in a good long summer. Regarding trailing etc, that depends on the variety, not all Butternut varieties trail..bear in mind there are many varieties of just Butternut squash alone. If you can tell me it's name I can tell you wether it will vine, semi vine or grow in a bush, you can't raise a bush type to grow upright!!

Take alook on you packet and get back to me,

Also, based on my experience with butternuts alone last year: well-prepared, rich soil produces more and bigger squash. Also full-sun vrs. part shade.
