What's the difference between regular tomatoes and potato leaved varieties ?
We're growing Matina this year and apart from the leaves it seems the same, are there any reasons why you'd grow one or the other ?

Good question macmac. I wondered that myself.

I wonder if I have some, as I am growing Liguria, that I bought in Nice.
I have already noticed that the leaves are less dentate than my others.

Here is the answer :-

interesting the bit about perhaps more tolerant to foliage diseases I wonder if that might include blight

The potato leaf ones are more likely to breed out...  :-\

The potato leaf ones tend to be tougher all round in my opinion, not blight resistant  but generally stronger. I have found this over the years to be very true.XX Jeannine

I was rather pleased this last season, when I grew Potato Leaf seedlings from seeds taken from from a Regular Leaf F1 plant the year before. The F2's were robust plants which I think supported the large beefsteak type fruit better.
I don't grow many PL varieties, but the ones I do grow have usually been chosen for taste above plant stamina.

I find potato leaved cultivars to be more resistant to foliar disease. The leaves are thicker as well as a different shape, I tnink it is probably the thicker leaves that makes the difference.

They are all tomatoes,it`s just that some varieties have tomato leaves and some do not.

Can cause endless fun though.  I was selling at a car boot sale a few years back and had this doylem wasting my time,he asked if my potato leaved varieties were diseased as their leaves were not the right shape.

No Sir I replied  -they are related to potatoes and have to be planted in trenches.

I`ll never get rich but I had to chuckle to myself

`Doylem`-a fool,time waster.

My post in no way implied the original question was that-I just got taken back to a car boot sale where I was fed up with someone who was trying to be clever and had no intention of buying

The main difference is that potato leafed ones are a little earlier to fruit.  But there is not much in it.
