In very simple terms can anyone tell me...

how can I take something written from the net, say an article, and show it on here without typing it all out. I don't mean a link, I just want the passage .

Please bear in mind I am so useless at this . I will have to print out what you say and try to use it as a guide, so please assume I know mothing, cos that is about right.

Laptop has Vista.

if you hold the left mouse button down and scroll along the passage with the mouse it will highlight it

when its highlighted hover the arrow over it then right click the mouse and click copy

then when you want to use the the copied info just right click the mouse and click paste

Hi Gaz, I had a go, found the poem I wanted to get, got it all highlighted like you said,right clicked to copy...it gave me  a window with that option so I clicked on copy, the window vanished and that was it!!

It didn't ask me where I wanted it to go, I have searched everywhere and I don't have it. I have done the same thing several times and the same thing happens,what  am I doing wrong?

Well done - you've cracked the COPY part of the task.

Ahhh but you do have it.  :)  Its all held in a hidden part of the computer memory.

Windows is very polite - it doesn't ask what you want to do, YOU have to tell it.

So... you want to copy it into a reply on here. Ok.  
1) Chose your A4A thread and click on reply, like you've done millions of times.

2) when the Post Reply box appears, right click in the Message box as if you were going to start typing.

3) Left click the mouse and that window will appear again , the one you managed with Gaz. Only this time select PASTE.  Hey presto the stuff that you copied has now reappeared in your A4A window.

You can paste into many applications like Word, Notepad, Excel, anything that accepts what ever it was that you copied. You can also use it to move stuff around within the page.

Note - you could practice the COPY/PASTE procedure with this text. ie copy the line starting "1)", then move your pointer to somewhere after the "3)" line, right mouse click  to position the cursor, then PASTE (left mouse click and select paste).

Go on - have a play, you'll soon get the hang of it.

And by the way, you can only PASTE the last thing that you COPY'd. When you COPY again it writes over the previous COPY.

If the PASTE option is not highlighted it means that you havn't COPY'd anything first.

Yes I guessed that was what had happened so I did it again and it worked..I did again on it's own post just for a bit of fun

Now if you want to be a Computer Whizz ...

Instead of left mouse click and select COPY, press the control (CTRL) key and the letter C at the same time.
You still have to have selected (highlighted) your text/picture etc first.

And once COPY'd, instead of left mouse click and select PASTE, press the control (CTRL) key and the letter V at the same time.


CTRL-C is COPY, and CTRL-V is PASTE, (CTRL-X is CUT [COPY and DELETE] ).

Note - once COPY'd you can PASTE as many times as you like.
