When i got my new computer it had word package on it but only as a 60 day trial once the 60 days were up it disappeared. Are you sure you had a full copy.

Open office is good i have it at home but be prepared for crashes and restores in the program. nothing to worry about but it will happen occasionally and you will get frequent requests for updates.
