     because they kept chickens?
I am seriously thinking about getting a couple of Bantams if him indoors is in favour. HI says he couldn't be a farmer because he couldn't have the animals slaughtered & certainly couldn't eat them which made me ask the above question.

I have a different take on this. I was a vegetarian for 17 years because I object to the way many animals are farmed. I started eating meat again a few years ago as I needed to for my health, and as a family with young children it isn't practical to cook different meals in the evening.

We recently started keeping chickens for their eggs and are now considering rearing them for meat. I would rather kill a chicken and eat it knowing it had a good life and was well treated than eat an  intensively reared bird from the supermarket.

Keeping hens hasnt made me avoid eating chicken or turn vegeterian, but what it has done is make me morally aware of where it has come from.Infact im a shooter so regulary eat the rewards from a good day in the field and i prefer having something which has lived a better life-which intensivly reared products have not.
Talk to the elbow-its got a point

I'm 66% vegetarian,

that's right, meat and two veg.

No, not from keeping chickens, I love a chicken sandwich. I would nearly become a vegetarian if OH didn't go on about it as much.

I was appalled at recent Jimmy's Kitchen and other telly progs that show terrible conditions for animals. Recent visit to America by JK and over 800 pigs in pens without the space to turn around. Horrible. I had to change channel. The chap rotating his cattle, followed by the chickens to go through the dung, now that's a plan and a half. I did enjoy that bit.

I saw that one with the pigs as well, the farmer seemed well please with his pork 'factory'.  :(

I did wonder what happens with the cleaning crew of chooks in winter when the cattle are indoors though. 1,000 rounds of chicken sandwhiches?

ive become very aware of eating meat since getting my chickens last year and always check were it is coming from now. I wont buy the budget chickens no more as i get the moral thing in my head
