Anyone else involved in the GBWRecords attempt this morning.. I've got some Hawthorn maidens to repair a hedge for free... but have to plant them between 11-12 this morning and take a photo to submit as part of the "world" record attempt..  :)

Would have liked to - but I've nowhere to plant any more.

got my OH to dig the hole for our tiny free hazel from Focus the other day while it was dry.  He thought I meant to plant it as well, so had to dig it back up again so that we can plant it this morning with our grand- daughter!  off to do it any minute now, after coffee.

Will have to explain on the witness statement that I'm technologically challenged...  ::)

am wondering how long it will be before we can harvest any poles from it- it's about 15" high at the moment!  However, as it's going to be YEARS before my name gets to the top of the allotment list, it'll have plenty of time!

I have the number eight in my mind but I don't know why...... want to set up a coppice in our wildlife area...

I'm reading Mony Don's book at the moment and he mentions seven years from setting up his coppice to actually harvesting poles so you were pretty much spot on Saddad!


I went to collect the free trees I had ordered from our local council today but can't plant them until tomorrow. I got 2 Crab apples, 1 wayfaring tree and 1 bird cherry.

I'm reading Monty Don too (Fork to Fork)- must have missed the bit about the hazels!  I love his descriptions of the different months- he makes herefordshire sound a delightful place to live, with all that hawthorn and fruit trees (wouldn't like the flooding though!)

It's his book 'Ivington Diaries'. I haven't read Fork to Fork, you've tempted me now!!  ;D

Not heard of that one- will have to ask at the library- they're very good at getting hold of stuff for me.
