I have just had my sons car engine replaced after he managed to "cook" the original one.

It is exactly the same type of engine,no mods or anything, just a strainght swop.

Can anyone tell me If I have to infrom the DVLC or somebody please?
You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose

Probably, because the engine number appears on the log book, and is recorded. But I don't know for sure.

You may need to tell the insurance company too, best to check just in case as it may be counted as a modification even though it is the same type.

Do that you will not get any of the cherry picking 'cheap' insurance companies to give you cover. They do not have the understanding and to them a different engine is a modification. Do not even enquire as all the quote sites are linked and you will have to answer correctly if you go for several quotes. (have you ever been refused insurance is a question asked on every site.

All it is really is a repair, so just inform the DLA. Their online site is very informative

i wouldn't think you would have to notify the dvla either.

Yes you need to inform the dvla, as asbean says, the engine number is linked to the registration document and can be checked by the police.
Best laid plans and all that

I didn't when I replaced the engine in a cavalier... but it was over a decade ago...  :-\

maybe i was wrong ! DVLA will need written evidence of any changes to engine number and cylinder capacity (cc). Written evidence can be:

a receipt for the replacement engine
written evidence from the manufacturer
an inspection report provided for insurance purposes
written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle

I would ! if you have an accident and DONT tell the insurance company it would be an excuse to refuse any payment !

I  know all about being refused cover.  My car is in the name of my disabled daughter who is unable to drive and 99% of all insurance companies refuse me cover.

It has also been modified to the extent of having four holes put in it to fix a ramp and restraining bars for a wheelchair.  So even when you have a set to with them about the disabled situation they then refuse to insure the car becuase of the modification.

My guess is that none of the cheapo insurance companies will touch it.  Prepare yourself to pay more.

The current policy is just about to expire so it is frustration time just coming up.  And yes I challenged Churchill and got a no way.  They will not guarantee to reduce my quote.   >:( >:( >:(  Even though they say so on the ads.
