I have now prepared enough ground to start thinking about some currants and gooseberries, also rhubarb.

The varieties I am thinking about are:

Gooseberry â€" Whinhams Industry
Red Currant â€" Junifer
Black Currant â€" Ben Conan
Rhubarb â€" Timperlay Early

I have never grown any of these myself so this is virgin territory for me. I will be placing the orders soon for bear rooted plants and they will be planted in ground not used for a number of years. This has been dug over and will be improved at planting with well rotted manure and blood/bone.

The soil is reasonably heavy clay but the site is slopped so does not waterlog. I am in West Sussex.

Anyone have any views on either the varieties I have chosen or any suggestions about alternatives I should consider.

Also, any growing tips?

Thanks

Just a 'me too', I'm afraid. I picked the same Gooseberry & Rhubarb but Ben Lomond as the Black Currant (can't remember why), and forgot the red currant, must add it to the order.

Even the soil sounds similar.

And you sail.

Are you me ???

Just make sure you keep calling yourself Jeremy and not shortening it to "Jerry" or else we will get really confused!!!! I am by birth a Jeremy as well!

Yep, sail as well, though not as much as I would like to. 365 days a year would suit perfectly but limited gardening oportunities! Oh and only if based some where nice and tropical!

Think it was Whinhams industry that got mildew on - Pax and Red Hickthingwhatsit  didn't.
