I know a photo would be easier, but someone may get it from the description. I could get a photo tommorrow...

Weed that is low growing, not climbing. Has ivy-shaped pale green leaves with a very thick cream coloured root that looks very similar to horseradish.

We had a large piece of root that looked like horseradish that was dug up from an area of our plot last winter. This summer a few bits have come back through. Nothign too horrendous and should be okay to get out whole. I am just wondering what it is.

It is definately not bindweed as the root is huge and the leaves are more ivy-shaped than bindweed. The bit we dug up last winter was probably 6inch in diameter.

It might be Good King Henry, have a google and see if the leaves are the same.

Rhubarb Thrasher

looks a bit like white bryony, our only native member of the cucumber family (probably)

A little google and it does look like White Bryony. Thanks RT.

Bloody good job our lottie neighbour didn't eat it convinced it was horseradish!!

I have white bryony as a very persistent weed in several places on my land. It is extremely difficult to eradicate, grows unbelievably quickly and as you have realised, very dangerous.  If you allow it to flower and set, the berries are a lovely scarlet and attractive to children  :(.  Best of luck in getting rid of it.
