I've been sorting through old family photos to copy and frame for a photo wall-we never look at them otherwise. We were fortunate that when my OHs lovely old auntie passed away she left us her splendid collection.Recent ones are easy to identify but some really old 1900-1930 ish I guess are beautiful glimpses of history BUT no names, locations or dates so sadly they are just pictures, there's nobody left to give us any information which I find really sad as my grandchildren were fascinated by them :(

Hi Macmac

Your photos sound wonderful, but must be frustrating not to know who they are in the pictures, perhaps you should start doing genealogy in the winter when you can't be out in the garden, there are a few of us on here that do...

I know of a forum, and I don't think Dan will mind me putting the link on as it is no competition to here, that has a section on photographs with people who can help with dating photos and if they really can get there they sometimes do try and identify where they are taken.  There are quite a few experts on there that may just be able to help if you posted them.  You could start if you have one with a building or other identifyable object in the background and clothes that might help with dating.  Have a look at the link and see what I mean, it might be worth a try.

and if you want any pointers about family history there is plenty on there, and some of us here who would help if we can.  It becomes like a big puzzle trying to work out who they are.  I had one recently where I had a load of photos and couldn't find any information about one of the sons and after a lot of searching found he was on the photos in a very roundabout way.  If you like cryptic crosswords or puzzles you might get there.

I have been meaning to sort my old photos out  and display some, it is a definite job for the dark winter nights ahead.  And a brilliant idea to copy them to display too so you have the originals still intact to pass on down the family.  Also you are closer in age to be able to deduce who they are than if you hand them on to the nect generation.  I'm sorry, I am rambling on cos I love doing this sort of thing.  You can ignore me, I won't mind. :-[

Good luck

We have been into Genealogy for about 17 years, and have found 4  things about it.
1,  it cannot be rushed

2,  If you don't like what you find then you shouldn't look,

3, once you really get into it , it is very addictive

and 4, every thing should be proven and documented for authenticity

I expect you already know what a wealth of information to be had from the library's of the LDS.... at no cost.

We have part of my husbands ancestry to 1497 all with required paper work,  plus a photogragh of  painting of said John Lymden, he was one of the last Priors at Reigate Priory, Surrey, the painting is oil on oak.......

thanks again for address, every little helps.. qahtan
