that made very unpleasant viewing indeed, informative though, thank you for highlighting this barbaric process.not sure its enough to want me to go vegan, but wonder what else can be done to stop it happening?

It's messy - killing animals is never nice - but it looks as though it's also quick. I do think they should be treated more humanely on the way to the grinder, or whatever they're going to use. Overall, though, I'd be more worried about the way the hens are treated.

All in the name of cheap meat and eggs.

Mind you if I hatch some myself the males will also have to be dispatched, not nice but part of raising animals.

You could pick a dual purpose breed (presumably there are such things) and raise the cocks for meat. My suister used to do that with bily goats, and that way they weren't born for nothing.

Don't you think people have to be 'strange' to be able to do such a thing.qahtan

It used to be perfectly normal to raise animals for the pot. The problem I see now is that we've hived the job off to commercial firms doing it on an industrial scale. Result is, most people are now too squeamish to see the killing done, despite being happy to eat the end product, and industrial-scale treatment of the animals is a lot worse than they'd get in someone's backyard.

I was thinking of doing this with the Marans I have. Big birds with plenty of meat and lovely large yolks in dark brown eggs...  :P
I hoe, I hoe, then off to work I go.

Pretty foul when you see it - but - as has been said they do not suffer a long drawn out death.  If you see some of the footage of the older chickens that are used for meat - that is horrendous - abbatoirs are also horrendous places.  But we eat meat - the reason the animals live at all is because we eat them or their eggs.

You would probably find the chicks that get killed for food for snakes/reptiles pretty harrowing too!  Nature is cruel - so if these chicks were alive and wild in nature they would meet far grislier deaths.

Not at all nice but a sobering thought for all that this is how it is.

Only watched half, and excuse me going to be sick, but I eat meat and buy chicken.  Love to see the chickens at the allotment, they look forward to people coming as know they are going to be let out into their pen and have made lovely holes in the dirt to roll in.  They are not going to be eaten and are kept for eggs and will die of old age.  Animals are so trusting, think I will become a veggie.

Horrific ....

but the killing of animals for meat is fundamental part of the human species

as a health inspector I spent many hours working in slaughter house and the people who work there are normal - for them and for me it was just a job

the problem as I see it is that the vast majority of us seem to have become detached from killing for food - in bygone days most people kept their own animals for food and they were despatched locally

the factory farming methods may be hygenic and humane - in the spirit of the regulations but it is not right in my book

I'd rather do without cheap meat and buy produce locally from people I know and trust

chickens dont need to be so badly treated at the end of their lives
