Onion question.

I harvested my onions on Saturday and left them on raks in the greenhouse to dry off. I have now cut off the folliage and put them on racks again, to put in my shed while I go away for a week. My intention is to hang them up in nets on my return. Will they be okay or have I made an error?
Can I use the onions now or do they need to be left? I am a bit loath to buy any until they have gone.

I would not go away and leave them in the greenhouse where the temperature can reach 50C.

Place them in a string onion bag or on a dry surface in a light outhouse.
They will have to be stored like that eventually.

Thanks for that but I will be keeping them in my shed while I am away, not the greenhouse. I was still wondering if I can actualy use some of these onions now or is it part of the process that I should wait?

You can use onions fresh you don't have to dry them - thats just so you can store them.

I use my overwintering onions and also this years banana shallots straight from the plot - thye tend to be slightly milder and sweeter than onions after drying for storage.

Cacran as Suzanne says you can certainly use them straight away. I was lifting a smaller one now and again to eat well before I lifted them all for storage.

Thanks for that. all onions now transfered into the shed in racks. Some onions have gone into a curry. mmmmm!!!!

Use the thick necked ones first these don't store as well as thin necked ones!

Mrs Saddad's nylons have been used to hang onions as well  ;D

Is there any other way?  I like Barely Black, myself.  Do you all knot inbetween each onion so any softening doesn't spread?  Only trouble is you can't wear them again afterwards.

But for actually storing them - we just fill em up. Cut from the bottom, remove one and then reknot
