I know that to the more experienced of you that this will sound really stupid but can I germinate my summer brassica seeds now and then plant them out for a "winter" crop. please be kind as I am a a total novice :-[ :-[

Some brassicas are suited for late autumn /  winter cropping others are not.

So can you be a bit more specific and tell us what varieties you have in mind!

Most summer cabbage will germinate and grow now but if they are big enough before the frosts is the problem as they are not as hardy as Savoys and "Winter Cabbages"  :-\

sorry brussels sprout(brilliant f1)
         cabbage (langedijk 4)
         broccoli(green calabrese)

The Sprouts will be fine. The brocolli wil do the job before winter, not familiar with that cabbage...  :-\

I dont think that cabbage will survive its a primo type and set away in Jan to March
When you wake up on a morning say "good morning world" and be grateful

You are a bit late for them all in my book but having said that you could try sowing a few seeds of each on the pretext; nothing ventured nothing gained!

You might be lucky but it is all down to when  the first frost will come.

Your brussels are a very early maturing variety so you might be OK

The same applies to the Cabbage

The Broccoli is a ten week variety so you could get some success here!
