Too windy?

Hi all,

Our sites quite open and as a result my newly planted sweetcorn are suffering  :-\ has anyone ever used canes on sweetcorn? Is there any advice or tips on how to reduce damage in the future?

Use early(round) peas like Frau Heinrich (tall) they are flowering now and about 5-7'tall a good windbreak, and they will be out in another month...  :)

Mound soil up around the stem of the sweetcorn. You will be surprised at how much wind the plants can take

If you do tie them up be carefully not to tie too tightly and strangle the plants as they grow. I have put some mini stakes on ours as it was very bad a couple of weeks ago. I will earth them up and then remove them in a couple of weeks.

Get them well earthed up. When I pot mine up I always put them well down in the compost so the top roots are well buried. If you look at a seedling you can see it has two lots of roots; the ones which emerged from the seed, and a ring which develops as the base of the leaves. As long as the latter are in well the plants are very stable.
