i've got a melon plant no idea what sort as i got it given, i read somewhere that you should pinch out the side shoots till it get to a decent height well i didn't it's not got what looks like 3 main stems of about equal size around 18"
there is a melon on one of the shoots is it worth trying to cut cack some of the other shoots or should i just leave it.  :)

Sound as if the plant was stopped (growing tip removed) before you got it so the laterals (side shoots) have developed.

This is not all bad but it might limit the amount of fruit you get as the fruit forms on these laterals.

I normally allow one fruit per lateral but in your case because it looks like you are only going to get three lateral you might get away with two fruit per lateral.

But these laterals will need more support than normal.

Here is a link that might help you; http://www.thegardenersalmanac.co.uk/Data/Melon/Melon.htm
