Hi all, I harvested my first two winter jap onions tonight at eight o clock, I was going to leave them for a while but they kept calling for me to pull them.  ;D ;D ;D

I broke the first couple of flower spikes out of mine...  :-\

Still on my final string of last years onion crop. But am sadly finding the odd flower stalk on the over winter ones.

They will get eaten first when the harvest is needed. They are getting a nice size though.

I've never grown them before.  When is the right time to harvest?  Do the tops die off like regular onions?  Can the jap ones be stored?  Any help is appreciated (as always).

Yes the tops will roll over, but sometimes they will bolt PJW.  I tend to harvest them when they're at the size I want them. I'm drying off in the greenhouse only because there is rain forecast for Monday.

PS and some garlic that's having a bolting fit too  ;D

They will store for 3-4 months... up to Christmas if you are really lucky..  :)

Thanks for the info guys.  I'll have to take a walk up to the plot and see how they're getting on.  I'll also check my garlic for any that are bolting.  BTW, great way of drying onions Linda.

Thanks PJW - not entirely my own work, an idea copied from a clever person on A4A!
