they are now tied to canes, i still managed to break them a bit getting them untangled and off the windowsill though so fingers crossed they will be ok!

Don't be too scared of hurting them, they're tough plants, toms.

My tips would be:

When you plant them, dig a trench and lay the root ball on its side at one end, run the lower stem, removing some leaves if necessary, along the trench then gently curve the plant up, bury the lower stem and you'll get new roots forming.

If you have any sideshoots you might consider cutting them off and potting them, they should grow happily into new plants, giving an insurance, if your trifids should suffer too much from their lankiness.
