Diseased Pear Tree

An old pear tree on my plot is looking very sickly.  One of the branches in the centre has failed to produce any leaves or flower buds.  There were buds, but they look scorched.  Some of the leaves at the end of other branches are drooping and turning black.   I have cut off the affected branches. I'm terrified that I may have a case of fireblight.  Any thoughts anyone?  :'(
