I fancy trying this. Have any of you who have done this successfully got suggestions as to how large/deep a container to use?
Thanks!

Never tried it (and not sure why you would really want to...?) You would need something pretty deep for carrots to be any good though and I've always found that garlic does much better in the ground than in pots.

garlic can be planted anywhere even in a flower bed. I know someone who grows them in flowerpots. I put them round the potato patch rather than grow in rows.

Carrots, and other roots can be grown in large containers like old dustbins but they can also be popped in between other plants on a flower bed. Beetroot and carrot leaves look quite good here and there.

I assume that you are thinking of this method because of a lack of space, the grow bags are not deep enough for root vegetables but you can get a good crop of tomatoes, peppers and a few cucumbers from them.

I want to grow a few oddity ones for the children, so thought this was a way they could do this without using too much of my main space. ( we stopped short of overall veg patch size as we think we have a buble bee nesting 3 foot into  potential bed

Instead of bags you could use crates, or toy boxes, this is what I'm trying this year with carrots. I'm also trying garlic both in the ground and large pots. Not sure how the pots of garlic will do as I think they need a lot of space, but its fun trying  :D

I use an old planting trough (4' long, about 9" deep) for early carrots in the GH. That's very successful - carrots nearly ready for pulling. But I've never tried it with larger carrots; I think you'd need something fairly deep.

And the problem with growing anything in pots is you do have to keep up with the watering.

How about those old flower buckets from Morrisons that they sell at 99p for about 8?  Drill a couple of holes in the bottom and away you go!
