growing carrots

can any one help with information/tips on how to grow carrots successfully.
I have made a raised box bed about 18 inch high by approx 5 ft long by approx 3 ft wide and filled it with a mix of humus gold compost/peat/sterilised top soil (approx a 30/30/30 mix)
I have done this because in our area (west Yorkshire) the soil is acid and was told it is very hard to grow them here with any success,most people use deep plastic barrels but i thought i would try a raised bed.
Also any tips on fertiliser/feeding them when hopefully! they germinate, i know you should not put any manure in
and it wants to be stone free.
What type would you recommend to grow as a successional crop and will they need covering with fleece or some form of cover to deter carrot fly( is it may/June when they are about?) as people keep saying they can not fly above 18 inch high.

Flip back through, carrots have been up a lot recently. In a raised bed fleece will help keep them moist so they germinate and keep the fly off. Just check that there are no slugs in there...  :)

you should put a barrier around your raised bed to make it above 30 inches as carrot fly do not fly above 30 inches although when i did it i still got the dreaded fly. now i grow carrots in containers on a table about 40 inches high and have no fly problems at all
