Jersey Walking Stick cabbage

i bought some seeds for these as we have had a dried walking stick (used to threaten children) for years. Anyway, I gave a plant to my son and one to my brother in law and a competition has developed to grow the tallest. My son is feeding his with worm juice and the compost gleaned from 84 members of his (hippy) housing co-op. My bro-in-law has been rushing back to play the Archers to his. So, in the face of this competitiveness, it has to be game on. Any tips?
